SIDONIE CHERYL SMITH is the Art Gallery’s New Featured Artist
Santa Monica, Ca –The Gallery Art Wall at the Santa Monica Unitarian Church announces that professional artist Sidonie Cheryl Smith is the Gallery’s newest Featured Artist. Sidonie will now be featured for the entire month of August 2013.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and now resident of Santa Monica Rev. Dr. Sidonie Smith’s artistic exploration and training began at the Santa Monica Emeritus College after her retirement. She is a woman with an artistic gift that has caught the attention and support of many of her artist instructors
Sidonie’s paintings in demonstrate her skillful use of color and bold marks, her diverse subject matter and compositional aesthetics. In her emboldened figure studies, landscapes, images of people, en plain air landscapes, nature studies, her distinctive style is evident
More than just a recording, Sidonie’s paintings reflect and present her passion for life and appreciation for the created world in which we live. They are her interpretation utilizing an impressionistic influence, abstraction, with an expression of strength, a human characteristic we all need for survival.
Sidonie has given voice to often forgotten members of Industrial Prison Complex in her series, “Freedom; another name for slavery. “ These works are born in response to the work of Douglas Blackmon and the Bill Moyer special, ”Slavery by Another Name.”
The atrocity of this system started in 1800’s is expressed in her multi-media pieces giving a “then and now” perspective.
The beauty of God’s creation is represented in her nature studies with the boldness and brilliance of her use of color. While the colors and shapes are traditional, the often-oversized proportions and use of color display the subjects in a way that is both original and recognizable.
Overall, Sidonie Cheryl Smith strives to blend a fresh perspective with a savvy demonstration of the power of color and composition in all of her works.
